However following the Attacks on September 11, 2001, Ergo changed direction and requested transfer into the Marine Corps Infantry. Mike Ergo would go on to serve as a Marine rifleman with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines from 2001-2005 and deployed to Iraq twice. In late 2004, Ergo would be put to the ultimate test participating in the bloody Second Battle of Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury.
