Britta Perry | The Value Of Failure.
Summary: This video essay was a character analysis of Britta Perry. One of the main cast members of the American Sitcom series "Community". I give a summary of the show itself, why it is beloved to this day as well as an official recommendation to watch it. I break down Britta Perry's History on the show, how she evolved as a person from season 1 to season 6. Going over why she was insulted and called the "worst" by everyone and from this making a social commentary on her character Arc being a lesson on the Value of Failure, that is quite often lost on us. "failure is not failure, unless you fail to try again." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Partial script Intro: Ahhh Community. Depending on who you ask. People either say they haven’t seen the American sitcom tv series and have tragically, tragically missed out or have seen it and binge the show every weekend from start to finish. There is no in-between. I thankfully fall into the latter and have probably watch the whole thing like 7 times. It’s just insanely good and the most honest compliment I can give this show is that it’s familiar. Watching this show it becomes so easy to fall in love with each character on their own as well as the chemistry between each of them. Disclaimer, I like character analysis because I believe we can learn things from studying the characters we love and hate from the shows we hate and love. I think really all characters are spectacles that apply to the real world if you just look at them long enough, while also enjoying them as they exist in fiction. On the subject of Britta perry today I will be examining Her personality, why she was the most “unliked” character in the show, and why her character arc was a refreshing commentary on the value of failing. Summary of Community The show is about a group of diverse misfit students from all different stages of life, who become an unlikely family as they bond over their shared differences while trying to get through their tertiary education, at Greendale community college. The catalyst for the group becoming a family is the formation of a Spanish study group by Jeff winger in season 1. “history” Britta started off in the show as a 30-year-old high school dropout who enrolled at Greendale to gain some direction in her life. She was estranged from her parents due to her resentments about how they treated her growing up, leading her to become an anarchist feminist. someone invested in social justice issues relating to inequalities and a deep scepticism of religions and the government. Social commentary Now my hot take and the big part about her character I think was actually missed by the fandom. What made Britta perry truly shine through as my favourite character. Had to do with how I believed her character represented the value of failure, the value of being the underdog. I think it was misunderstood that Britta was somehow a true screw up even by the end of the show., But you would only think that if you believe that “failing is failure”. I think literally everyone, from Annie to Dean Pelton was actually resentful of Britta, jealous of her for never giving up or breaking. When you think about it, her lack of material and personal success should have been a massive contributor of breaking her spirit, maybe forcing her to give up, nobody really believed in her, not even herself, and yet still, she never did for 6 seasons. when the others call her the worst, I think they were actually calling out her relentless ability to make do with her lack of perceivable achievements. And the reason the others resented her for this was because Britta defied their own perceived limitations of coming back from greater failure. Conclusion: Britta perry was unequivocally not a failure, because She never gave up on playing the game and continuing her story, even with her lacklustre intelligence and history of empty activism. So, what if she became a bartender. I think she was happy with that. And in the end what is a greater symbol of success than being happy.
