Beyond the Horizon: Using OCIANA® for collaborative and just-in-time marine operations
In March 2024, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster announced funding for a project with Global Spatial Technology Solutions (GSTS), Canada Steamship Lines, Montreal Port Authority, Laurentian Pilotage Authority, and Clear Seas: Empowering Maritime Collaboration with AI Powered Intelligence.
Using GSTS’s OCIANA® platform, the objective was to develop and implement a Collaborative Berth Scheduler, a solution which connects ships, pilotages, and ports to provide optimal berth schedule management, the equivalent of an Air Traffic Control System for Ships.
This advancement in digitization will empower increased maritime collaboration, enablement of digital corridors, facilitation of just-in-time operations, and optimized management of resources to minimize emissions, reduce fuel consumption and decrease wait-times.
Krista Foster, Director of Products, GSTS, provides an overview of the project’s progress and demonstrates how OCIANA® can be applied with novel AI algorithms to improve the efficiency of the maritime supply chain and incorporate a range of considerations for both operations and planning purposes to assess and mitigate risks to shipping operations and the environment.
Clear Seas is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that provides independent fact-based information to enable governments, industry, and the public to make informed decisions on marine shipping issues. We work to build awareness and trust so that all people can feel a part of the marine sector. Our vision is a sustainable marine shipping sector that is safe, vibrant, and inclusive, both now and for future generations.
