Brompton-by-Sawdon is an idyllic country village known as the 'Birthplace of Aviation’. It is located in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England about 8 miles from Scarborough and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Many artists have painted the picturesque Brompton Beck and ponds. This walk starts in the woods near Brompton Beck.
The village is known for its historic buildings, including the 12th-century All Saints Church, which is a Grade I listed building. It is here where the Lake District English Romantic poet William Wordsworth married his childhood friend Mary Hutchinson on October 4th, 1802. A copy of the wedding certificate is on display inside the church.
The village is also said to have once been the residence of the Northumbrian kings but the most significant influence in its history, is the Cayley family. During the early 17th century the Cayley family acquired an estate in Brompton and by 1760 they owned most of the village and continued to until the mid 1950s. They left the legacy of a picturesque village comprising of 17th and 18th century buildings and cottages, a church, working farms and a primary school and a village hall.
Brompton Hall, a Georgian town house in the village centre which is now a special school, was the home of pioneering aeronautical engineer Sir George Cayley. Born in Scarborough in 1773, he died at Brompton Hall in 1857 and is often considered ‘The Father of Aeronautics’. In 1853, he was the first recorded person to fly a short distance with his coachman over Brompton Dale in a glider which he designed. Incredibly, he also designed the ‘tension wheel’ which is now used in all modern bicycle wheels.
Cayley also built the Cayley Arms roadside village pub which was originally a 19th century coaching inn.
Brompton Forge featured on the thumbnail was once the village blacksmith’s shop which the 1890 Bulmer’s Directory of Trades and Professions records as being George Scales.
