I nearly forgot about “Rosetta Stoned” from TOOL, and after many requests I decided I’d go back in time and reacquaint myself with this bizarre track from the “10,000 Days” record. A select few parts came back to me quickly, but a sizable chunk of the song felt brand new! It was a blast putting this one under the microscope and listening with a critical ear, and I heard bassist Justin Chancellor make a lot of bass moves I don’t hear him do too often: lyrical bass fills, bold counterpoint, and playing so dynamically underneath the fragile vocal performance to really elevate the song’s pacing. I also discuss how Maynard’s vocals are the antithesis of a typical “lead vocal” role, how Adam Jones can add ONE additional note to a chord and intensify the song, and how at any given time, the four of them can all represent a lead line within the track.
