I booked my car rental, Airbnb, and flights in December for a trip in July because I heard that all three of these things are limited. That is true! How do I know it is true? Because at the end of my time in Flores Island my flight was cancelled due to inclement weather (high winds), and there were no available bookings for any alternative car or hotel. Thankfully my Airbnb hosts let me return for one more night, but I RECOMMEND BOOKING IN ADVANCE!!! (I chose to lodge in Lajes das Flores, which was a good decision!--Easy to get to either side of the island, and great views!).
The beauty of the island is that there is so much nature and not a lot of people. However, resources are also limited, and it is isolated with only a few flights daily (subject to cancellation). Be ready for an amazing adventure! I am SO GLAD I went!
I also recommend booking buffer travel days for your international flight from Ponta Delgada. I did hear about this and I did do this, and I AM GLAD! I had reserved 2 nights at the end of my Azores trip in case a flight got cancelled, which I am told frequently happens. Sure enough that happened, and it was nerve-wracking waiting for the one plane that would take me back to San Miguel!
I stayed in Airbnb Casa Pedras Brancas, which I recommend (no commission received, just a resource for you): https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/802636367563743104?adults=1&children=0&enable_m3_private_room=true&infants=0&pets=0&search_mode=regular_search&check_in=2025-05-10&check_out=2025-05-15&source_impression_id=p3_1738432758_P32U24GufH7bANnC&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=82e33a31-9cba-4665-a6be-fd61dd226db5
I rented a car from AutAtlantis, which I was recommended by my Airbnb hosts. Great! I would book again, and I loved my cute blue car! (No commission received, just a resource for you): https://autatlantis.com/
