I start the day by sharing insights into how inflation in Turkey has impacted daily life and tourism. Beginning with breakfast, we tried some traditional Turkish bread and the popular street food mussels stuffed with rice. My wife loved the mussels, and it’s a must-try for anyone visiting Istanbul. Next, we explored the lively streets near the iconic Galata Tower, where we admired the historic architecture, soaked in the vibrant atmosphere, and enjoyed a delicious Turkish kebab.
As we ventured further, we discovered the underground shops near Galata Tower. I couldn’t help but joke about how it resembled a black market, with its maze-like setup and vendors selling all kinds of goods. This is a unique side of Istanbul that many tourists overlook. After browsing, I decided to visit the stunning Dolmabahçe Palace, one of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks. However, my journey took an interesting turn when I asked a local taxi driver for a ride and was quoted a ridiculously high fare. Instead, I opted for an Uber, which was much more reasonable and stress-free.
At Dolmabahçe Palace, I was amazed by the grandeur and elegance of the architecture. It’s a must-visit for history and art lovers. However, Istanbul’s inflation hit again when I stopped at a food stall and paid £10 for a simple jacket potato. While overpriced, it’s an example of how the economic crisis has affected even small street vendors.
After the palace, we returned to the heart of Istanbul to visit the breathtaking Hagia Sophia, one of the most famous landmarks in Turkey. Walking inside this historic mosque was a surreal experience, as the blend of Islamic and Byzantine architecture is simply stunning. It’s a powerful reminder of Istanbul’s incredible history and cultural significance.
Throughout this Istanbul travel vlog, I discuss the growing issue of tourist scams in Istanbul, offering tips on how to avoid them and make the most of your trip. From overpriced taxi rides to inflated food prices, I share my firsthand experiences to help fellow travelers navigate these challenges. I also highlight the importance of supporting honest vendors and businesses while exploring this beautiful city.
To end the day, I visited a local restaurant for dinner, which, while overpriced, offered a delicious taste of authentic Turkish cuisine. Istanbul is a city full of charm, history, and beauty, but its current economic situation presents challenges that tourists need to be prepared for.
