For example, an attacker might send unsolicited ARP replies (sometimes called Gratuitous ARPs) to their victim and the victim's default gateway, causing traffic flowing between the victim and its gateway to pass through the attacker's computer (where they might eavesdrop in on that traffic). You'll see how this attack can be launched with a utility called Ettercap.
