Arnold Yeschin - U.S. Army 1965-67 | Vietnam War
Arnold Yeschin was born and raised in Far Rockaway New York and served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967. According to Arnold the day he was drafted, "September 25th, 1965 was my lucky day because obviously I'm still here." After shipping to Vietnam on the U.S.N.S. Darby, Arnold served with the 196th Light Infantry before being transferred to the 25th Infantry Division in the areas of Tay Ninh and Cu Chi where Arnold participated in numerous search and destroy missions. Like many Vietnam Veterans, Arnold did not talk about his experiences for many years. One day his daughter volunteered him to speak at her school and he has continued speaking to elementary and middle school children about his experiences both in the classroom and at his VFW Post 5942 (Plainview, NY) for more than 20 years, an experience that Arnold described to us as cathartic.
