Dr. Marrero is the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and an internationally recognized expert in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver transplantation. His research has advanced the field of early detection and risk stratification of liver cancer, and he has served as a mentor to numerous faculty who have secured NIH K awards and independent research funding in HCC, liver transplantation, and healthcare disparities. He received his gastroenterology training at the University of Illinois at Chicago, began his academic career at the University of Michigan, where he established the Liver Cancer Program, and later led one of the nation's largest liver transplant programs at UT Southwestern. At Penn, he now leads the GI and Hepatology Division. Dr. Marrero is a founding member of the International Liver Cancer Association, and serves on several national committees including the NCCN Hepatobiliary Committee. He is an Associate Editor for Gastroenterology and a prolific contributor to top-tier journals such as NEJM, JAMA, JNCI, and JCO. The current state-of-the-art lecture was presented at the INEDSYS Hepatology club on April 19, 2025 by Dr. Marrero.
