Absent by Default? Challenging the Myth of the Missing Father
Presenter: Contrell Armor, M.S., Director, Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN)
Too often, the dominant narrative around fatherhood—particularly for men of color—centers on absence rather than presence. This session challenges the myth of the "absentee father" and explores how cultural stereotypes, systemic barriers, and media portrayals have shaped a one-dimensional view of fatherhood. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how fathers show up in meaningful, though sometimes unseen, ways in their children’s lives. Together, we will examine the roots and real-world impacts of this narrative, highlight the diverse expressions of fatherly involvement, and reflect on strategies to uplift and affirm the authentic stories of active fatherhood.
