Back light isn't always as simple as just placing a light behind your subject; the parts of the body the light falls on to can actually be broken down into 4 general terms: Rim Light, Edge Light, Hair Light and Kicker - and each of these can be utilized in cinema, to create, emphasise and carry the feelings of the story being told. In Part 2, we take a look at Edge Light - a more subtle form of back light than the Rim Light, which can be used in combination with composition to drive the feelings presented by the image or story, in a more nuanced way.
