A Fun, Silly Mess (With Great Combat) | Resident Evil 6
While its combat system is excellent, Resident Evil 6 works against it instead of with it, and gets about as far away from its series roots. Few games have given me more mixed feelings than Resident Evil 6. It's a game that took the action-focus approach of RE4 and 5 and pushed it as far as it could go. However, for a good portion of the campaigns, the level design doesn't work with this system, it likes to work against it. As well, Resident Evil 6 does a terrible job of explaining how this combat system works. Save for a few short instances, the horror is all but nonexistent. Resident Evil 6 has major pacing issues, something the series has excelled at. Cutting anywhere from 25-30% of the game's ~20hrs to beat the four campaigns would've done wonders for RE6. Resident Evil 6 is a game that has some of the worst excesses of the 7th generation, the WII, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 generation. A time when Japanese devs were trying to implement more western design trends. There's something really fun and great buried in Resident Evil 6 - it's just filled with excess. It's a combat system I'm surprised Capcom hasn't really taken into a spinoff title, or a different IP, because there's something here that even all these years later, makes Resident Evil 6 worth digging through. This Resident Evil 6 review/analysis/retrospective/critique looks at how RE6 came to be, the combat system, level design, the campaigns, the mercenaries' mode, and the future of the series.
