A fabulous Corgi in coloured pencils | Derwent Review

#ad I so enjoyed creating this fabulous corgi! The rich colours and layering possibilities made this piece such a joy to work on. The Lightfast paper has a lot of tooth, and it’s a nice creamy white, which was perfect for the subject I picked to draw. It’s a hot press paper made specifically for the Lightfast pencils, so of course, they work beautifully on it. I used the Derwent Drawing pencils as a base for the background because they are very soft with a thick core, so the coverage is amazing. Then, I used the Lightfast pencils on top as they are more vibrant. Layering is excellent on the Lightfast paper—it kind of feels like you can go on forever! For the corgi, I used just the Lightfast pencils. I needed sharp pencils since the image was relatively small, so the Derwent Super Point sharpener was a godsend—the points are extremely sharp and long! When layering in the colours, I used a lot of oranges. The Dark Orange Lightfast is one of my favourite oranges—it’s like a burnt orange and is just fabulous mixed with purples, reds, and greens. Lightfast Mars Black is my all-time favourite coloured pencil—it’s incredibly versatile and wonderful for those dark, rich shadows, but also equally fabulous for glazing an area to make it a little darker.
