#8 What do you do when you hate dealing with problems? - Overcoming Worry & Anxiety | Dr. Rami Nader
One of the biggest sources of worry for people who worry a lot is problems. It is often assumed that people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (and people who worry a lot) are not very good at solving problems. However, that’s not true. People who worry a lot are just as good at solving problems as people who don’t worry a lot. The difference is that people who worry a lot tend not to use their problem-solving skills because of something called Negative Problem Orientation. Negative Problem Orientation is a tendency to view yourself as not good at solving problems and thinking about problems as threats. If you are not good at solving problems and problems are threatening, then it’s natural to want to avoid problems as much as possible. However, the more you avoid a problem, the more you worry about it and, usually, the worse the problem gets. Negative Problem Orientation comes out in three main ways: 1) Seeing problems as abnormal, or that there’s something wrong if I have problems. 2) Focusing on the threatening aspects of the problem and not seeing the opportunity or challenge in it. 3) Getting so effective at avoiding problems, that a person fails to recognize that a problem is there.
