Rotterdam is the second biggest city of the Netherlands after Amsterdam. Rotterdam has a population of 630,000 and Rotterdam-Rijnmond 2.2 million. The city of Rotterdam, in particular the spectacular site of Ahoy was chosen to host the Eurovision 2021. However, due to the outbreak of the Corona virus in 2020 the event was cancelled.
In 2021 there was a new attempt to organize the song contest for thousands of fans. As the Covid-19 pandemic was ongoing and Ahoy was still in a lockdown - and used as a XL Corona Test Site by the Public Health Department of Rotterdam - the event will be broadcasted online. It was not possible to host thousands of guests in Ahoy.
