Introduction VMware vSphere® Fault Tolerance (FT) provides continuous availability to virtual machines, eliminating downtime and disruption—even in the event of a complete host failure. This white paper gives a brief description of the vSphere FT architecture and discusses the performance implication of this feature with data from a wide variety of workloads. vSphere FT Architecture vSphere FT enables a virtual machine to survive a physical server failure by creating an exact replica virtual machine on another host that can take over at the time of failure. During failover, the transition of a vSphere FT virtual machine from one physical server to another is similar to a migration using vSphere vMotion®: it is completely seamless.
