Pulling off a first-corner pass that will live through the decades, Red Bull's Max Verstappen defied the McLaren-Mercedes odds to win at Imola. His instant lead was expanded first by a fortuitous Virtual Safety Car (lap 30) but then deflated by a subsequent Safety Car deployment on lap 46. With both McLarens piled up behind him at the restart, the odds still favoured McLaren. Yet Max drove faultlessly, pulling away from Oscar Piastri (who was on used tyres rather than the new tyres fitted to the Red Bull and Lando Norris's McLaren) to set fastest lap en route to winning by 6.1 seconds.
