Jaecoo isn’t a name you’re familiar with, probably. It’s an odd amalgam of words - one German, one English - both selected to engineer an image in your mind.
Also 'engineered' is its look: one repeatedly inviting a comparison with Land Rover; their Range Rover specifically, and maybe the Evoque and Velar in some areas.
But while those cars cost a fortune, the J7 is far more reasonably priced, coming it at just under RM140k for a fully specified SUV that, if you opt for the AWD version that we tested, should even be half decent if you take it mildly off-road one in a while.
Its 1.6-litre engine isn’t too much to shout about, delivering adequate power but could do with extra refinement. That mill, however, alongside the attached 7-speed dual clutch auto, is its strongest link - for better or worse - to another model under the same Chery umbrella, the Tiggo 7 Pro.
Any way you slice it, the Jaecoo J7 is a lot of SUV for the money, though the rest of the brand is something of an open question.
Still, even brand snobs must admit, if only to themselves, that it looks pretty good.
