1-Hit Wonder Has The #1 SONG in MTV’s HISTORY & IT NEVER EVEN Had a MUSIC VIDEO! | Professor of Rock
Some songs were always destined to make millions, usually through chart dominance and endless airplay. But sometimes, the biggest paydays come from the most unexpected places. Some songs have made their creators absolute fortunes in ways no one saw coming or could ever predict, including the artists themselves. Today we’re counting down five songs no one expected to win the lottery… including the story of one songwriter who unwittingly missed millions in royalties because he thought the song Happy Together was dumb and rejected a writing credit. And another that was a forgotten album cut by Devo until it hit pay dirt and now the author of it makes a million a year off it and it’s become the most played song in MTV history... even though the song has no actual music video! Their stories are coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Robert Taylor, Missy D, Stan Summay, MG, David Fritz ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store - Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 - The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq - 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 - Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ - 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX - Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk - Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! But Today we turn that notion on its head…Not every song that rakes in millions is an obvious hit. Some songs dominate the charts and generate revenue through constant radio play—like The Police’s Every Breath You Take, the most played song in radio history, or You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, the most played song of the 20th century… revitalized by Top Gun. The Beatles’ Yesterday is the most covered song of all time, and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You, which pulls in between $2 to $3 million every holiday season, are also predictable money-makers. But what about songs that amass fortunes in ways no one saw coming? These songs and the money they make will shock you. Today, we’re diving into five of the most unexpected high-grossing songs of all time—a. They aren’t the biggest money-makers of all time. However, they’ve all made enough to set up their respective artists for life. So let’s get started. So starting things off at #5, I’ve got a Halloween song that was released as a single in November 1983: Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Whatever you think of the man’s complicated legacy, you gotta give him props for doing something no one had done before… cashing in big time on Halloween. Before Thriller, no one could have predicted a Halloween song would become one of the highest-grossing songs ever. Of course, in hindsight, it makes sense… Thriller was a commercial juggernaut, by some estimates selling 120 million copies. It’s probably impossible to know for sure, but we all know that Thriller was big. Jackson reportedly made at least $134 million from the album in the two years following its release. The single "Thriller" contributed to this success, though specific earnings from just the single are anybody’s guess. According to the RIAA and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Thriller has generated over $1.5 billion in revenue since its release, which includes album sales, singles sales, and streaming revenue. Christmas had already been done. Old school seasonal songs like White Christmas and Santa Claus is Coming to Town were already among the highest-grossing songs ever
