However, no line of succession ever truly dies, which means that a man still existed whose right it was to rule. This man was Stannis Baratheon. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Exploring Fiction. The middle of the Baratheon brothers, Stannis is a man much unlike his kin. While Robert was a fierce warrior with a lustful appetite and Renly was a more kindred soul with an appreciation for serenity and a dash of cunning, Stannis was none of those things. He was cold and distant, firm and calculating, iron-willed and commanding of respect. With the death of his eldest brother and the revelation that his children were born not of Baratheon blood, Stannis was the true heir to the Iron Throne. However, the contention of these rumors and the love of power of the other highborn nobles ensured his path would not be easy. Still, Stannis Baratheon was not a man to shy away from a challenge, especially when his prize was the duty he so unwaveringly desired. He was forced to make decisions that went against his own desires, but all leaders must suffer such circumstances. Despite his hardened heart, Stannis proved a man willing and able to compete against the sly denizens of the capital and elsewhere to obtain what was his, and also demonstrated that he would act to separate right from wrong as he saw fit, just as a true king would do. He was truly a man unfit for his time, but was seen only as a dissident despite his iron-clad claim. So, who exactly is Stannis Baratheon, and why is he such an interesting character?
